Home Improvement by Rebecca Moss
Home Improvement is a video work by Essex-based artist Rebecca Moss. During the covid pandemic lockdown of 2021, Moss built a low-fi smile machine in her back garden in Romford, using a variety of everyday household objects such as buckets and coat hangers. When activated by the artist, who performs in the work, the buckets slowly fill with water, pulling the mechanism and contorting her face into a smile that becomes increasingly torturous over time. Home Improvement was originally commissioned by Jerwood Foundation for Survey II, an exhibition that toured to g39 in Cardiff, Site Gallery in Sheffield, and Jerwood Gallery in London.
