Merrick d’Arcy-Irvine X Julia Bajanova - Mirror
We humans are social creatures. Without others to reflect our behaviour back to us, we lose what defines us - language, culture, the capacity for creative expression. That is why photographer Merrick d’Arcy-Irvine and designer Julia Bajanova are invested in intense encounters: not only with the people who appear in their pictures, but also with each other, as artists and as humans, and between their media and the materials out of which they are made. The materiality and sensual experience of these media in the physical world are the focus of the pictures gathered in this volume, which is why these two artists have eschewed digital technologies. Sensuality forges an emotional bond between their creative universes, whose boundaries become permeable, as do the dividing lines between genres. Colours and forms are fused in a shared language in which they write their messages in light on photographic paper. They speak to what makes us human: creative energies untrammelled by the necessities of everyday life. The pictures in Mirror, then, are reflections of our existence and portals of self-knowledge.

Tracing Movement screening
Date/
19:00-20:00 Fri 6 Dec 2024
Location/
Close-Up Cinema, 97 Sclater St, London E1 6HR
Flux Projects is proud to present Tracing Movement, a screening of seven short films exploring the intersection of mark marking and dance.
These ways of working, usually shown in separate contexts, are both fundamentally gestural and, as such, deeply kindred. Abstract art can be said to be the recorded outcome of movement, often intuitive, emotional and even musical. Dance, often thought of as transient and intangible, can also be perceived as a series of invisibly drawn shapes.
Join us for this one-off screening of seven short films by: M.Lohrum X Calvin Richardson, Caroline Denervaud, Daphne van de Velde, Olive Hardy X Lydia Walker, Megan Rooney, Heather Hansen and Jade Blackstock.
Doors open: 18:30
Event run time: 1hr (i.e. 19:00-20:00)
FILM/
Untitled (ETNA) by Jade Blackstock
Untitled (ETNA) is a performance by Jade Blackstock, set on Mount Etna, a 3,403-metre active volcano in Catania, Sicily. Traces of footprints etched into the snow mark the artist’s path to the site. Jade carefully shovels away layers of snow, revealing a hollow in which she slowly embeds herself, her body contacting the black ash underneath. This intimate gesture invites contemplation on the delicate relationship between human and nature, exploring themes of belonging, solitude, and meditative connection. Captured by Alex Gulino using both drone and handheld cameras, the performance reflects on presence and the sacredness of place.
